SUBU was founded in 2016 by Toshihiko Fukawa in Tokyo, where slippers are a centuries-old tradition and an inseparable part of a kimono outfit. The brand offers versatile Japanese (house) shoes for modern rituals. Inspired by the sandals of Buddhist monks of bygone eras who wore similar footwear on their pilgrimages along the Shikoku trail, SUBU reinvents a time-honored tradition with its unique range of essential slippers.
The signature mule and low-top designs feature a pared-down aesthetic with technical details. The upper is made of lightweight nylon or technical satin with a water-repellent coating for walking around the neighborhood, or durable, fire-resistant Cordura®350D canvas for the best outdoor performance even around the campfire or barbecue. Each shoe is available in vibrant and neutral colors, including exclusive nature-inspired graphics. All models are coated with Teflon™ and lined with fleece for weather resistance and coziness. The raised inner fabric contains a four-layer insole that gives the feeling of perfect fit and softness when walking, making you feel like you're walking on clouds.
On the outside, SUBU shoes have a treaded sole, which means that nothing stands in the way of trips to neighbors or friends, to the garden or to go shopping. SUBU combines form and function and adapts to the daily routines of its wearer - extremely comfortable and effortlessly cool with the warmth and coziness of a down jacket for the colder months.
